The cover photo, by Rolf G. Asphaug, is of hoar frost ­coating grass in a meadow near the Jackal Hut, a back­country cabin located north of Leadville and operated by the 10th Mountain Division Hut Asso­ciation. The association honors the soldiers of the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, who trained during World War II at Camp Hale in Central Colorado. Asphaug used a Canon PowerShot SD960 IS, ISO 125, 14.8 MM, 0 EV, f/5, 1/1600, 3000 x 4000 2.89MB. He is deputy general counsel for the Regional Transportation ­District. He has been the president, a telemark ski instructor, a wilderness travel school director, and a trip leader for the Colorado Mountain Club, and is a founding board member of the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative. He moved to Colorado twenty-five years ago, after backpacking most of the way from Tucson, Arizona to Portland, Oregon. Asphaug and his wife Jane and their two young boys enjoy skiing, hiking, camping, and Scouts.
