Call for Entries: 2013 Denver Lawyers Arts & Literature Contest—Deadline to Enter April 15
Are you an attorney with an artistic inclination or a way with words? The submission period is open to enter your creative works in the 2013 Denver Lawyers Arts & Literature Contest, sponsored by The Docket. Contest submission categories include: Writing—Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Humor; and Visual Arts—Painting (watercolors and oil/acrylic/mixed media), Drawing, Sculpture, and Photography. In all categories, the subject matter is open to the artists’ choice—no legal subject matter is required. Winners will be recognized in the September issue of The Docket. Download an entry form here. 14th Annual Roll Out the Barrels Food Drive—April 15–26
Sign up your office as a donation location by Friday, April 5, to continue to fight hunger and feed hope in 2013. DBA Young Lawyers Division Law Day Reception—Thursday, May 2
Join the DBA Young Lawyers Division and Vincent E. Morscher, head of the attorney general’s Civil Litigation and Employment Law Department, and Steve Chavez, director of the Colorado Civil Rights Division, for a cocktail reception at The Lobby beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 2. Morscher and Chavez will present briefly on the American Bar Association’s Law Day theme, “Realizing the Dream: Equality for All.” Admission is free and includes appetizers and two drink tickets. Law Day “Realizing the Dream” Contest—Deadline is Friday, April 19

Gain an appreciation for the 2013 Law Day theme, “Realizing the Dream—Equality for All,” by participating in the Law Day contest. Submit art work, short essay, short video, or other recording, while addressing the question: What role should the legal system play in ensuring that Americans protect our national ideal of equality for all?
Attorneys in the DBA Young Lawyers Division, law students at the University of Colorado and University of Denver, and students in 9th through 12th grades in the Denver Public School district are eligible to participate. Civil Unions: Legal Consequences for Family and Trust and Estate Practices—Wednesday, May 1

Colorado lawmakers have taken a historic vote to approve civil unions for same sex couples; the measure grants same-sex couples similar rights to married couples. Gov. John Hickenlooper signed the bill into law on March 21, and the law takes effect on May 1. Find out how the new law will change the legal landscape of your practice.
