DBA Mentoring Program: Applications due Tuesday, Nov. 15

The Denver Bar Association is accepting applications for both mentors and mentees for the 2012 program. The program's objectives are to promote pride in the profession; excellence in service; and strong relationships with the bar, courts, clients, and the public. This is accomplished by teaching the core values and ideals of the legal profession, as well as, the best practices for meeting those ideals. Strikes for Tykes, Saturday, Nov. 5
Put on your bowling shoes and come join the DBA's Community Action Network at Strikes for Tykes-a bowling benefit for the Children's Outreach Project. This event will take place from 11a.m. to 3p.m. at Elitch Lanes, located at 3826 Tennyson, in Denver. Cost is $50 for adults, $35 for children (12 and under) and includes lunch and beverages. Colorado Lawyers for Colorado Veterans Volunteer Training Session, Saturday, Nov. 5

The CBA and CBA YLD are starting free legal clinics for veterans across Colorado. The first clinics will be held Friday, Nov. 11 in Denver and Colorado Springs and Thursday, Nov. 10 in Fort Collins. A training session will be held on Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the CBA CLE offices, 1900 Grant St., Suite 300, in the large classroom. The training program is free for attorneys volunteering for these or upcoming clinics. Three CLE credits are approved. The program will highlight several topics, including benefits, housing, consumer, and family law, that deal specifically with veterans' legal issues. It will also be available as a webcast. Judge Student Constitutional Presentations
Lawyers are needed to judge We the People Congressional Hearings. Available days and times: Skinner Middle School in Denver, Nov. 3; and Nov. 22, at Cherry Creek Schools Instructional Support Facility in Centennial. Volunteers will observe and judge student group 10-minute presentations on a constitutional topic, and then discuss the presentations with the students. Judges will score the students on their ability to apply the constitutional concepts to real experiences. Orientation provided before the event. To volunteer, contact Carolyn Gravit.

Bench and Bar Retreat: Civil Access Pilot Project, Saturday, Nov. 19
The topic for this year's retreat will be the Civil Access Pilot Project in the District Courts: Limits on Discovery in Business Cases. After a brief presentation on the changes that will take effect in select district courts on Jan. 1, attendees will be split into discussion groups, which will include judges, to discuss these changes as well as broader topics on whether trials can be fair and effective with limited discovery. The retreat will run from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the DoubleTree Hotel in Westminster. Four CLE credits, including ethics, will be requested. Click here for more information or to RSVP.

With progressive and innovative methods in alternative dispute resolution, the 5th Annual Statewide ADR Conference will explore the unique perspectives that individuals and groups bring to the practice of dispute resolution. Presenters will reflect on the impact of emotional intelligence and neuroscience on the practitioner and workshops will focus on interacting with special populations, including same-sex partners, deaf or hard of hearing clients, victims of crimes, and persons with diminished capacities. The Commission on Presidential Debates has selected the University of Denver as the host site for the first of three 2012 Presidential Debates.
