Michael Bender

The University of Colorado Law School has named Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael L. Bender the 2013 recipient of the William Lee Knous Award, the school’s highest honor for outstanding achievement and sustained service to the law school. The award is named for a 1911 graduate of the school, the only person in Colorado history to have occupied the highest seats in each branch of government: president of the state Senate, governor, and chief justice. The award was established in 1960.

Polsinelli attorney Roy Bash has become a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Bash is a firm shareholder and chair of the construction/energy/real estate litigation practice group.


Alison Zinn


The Colorado Supreme Court named James C. Coyle to head the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel. Coyle replaces John S. Gleason, who retired from the office after 25 years of service.

Sarah Rector

Sarah Louise Rector, born Sept. 24, 1982, passed away March 16 at University Hospital after a brief illness. She was a vibrant, beautiful young woman who will be remembered by her family and friends for her resolve and generosity of spirit. Rector graduated from George Washington High School in 2000 and from Yale College in 2004. She received an M.A. in Art History from the University of Delaware in 2007 and a J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School in 2010. Rector clerked for Colorado Court of Appeals Judge Jerry N. Jones from 2010 to 2012 and subsequently worked at Cooley LLP in its Intellectual Property Division. Rector loved to volunteer, was a member of the Denver Mile High Rotary, and was a skilled classical pianist. Read the full memoriam at

Edward Nelson Juhan, 86, died Jan. 22 in Lakewood. Juhan was born July 1, 1926, in Glenwood Springs to Joe T. and Genevieve Juhan. In 1954, he received his LLB from the University of Denver Law School. In 1955, he was named Assistant State Attorney General and held this position until establishing his own law practice in 1956. Juhan was elected District Attorney for the First Judicial District of Colorado in 1964, serving until 1968. Prior to being elected, he was Deputy District Attorney. He was appointed by Gov. John Love and served as Commissioner of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission from October 1969 to June 1972, and Vice Chairman from 1972 to 1977.
In 1998, he established a scholarship at Westminster College for students exhibiting leadership and financial need. Later in his career he pursued oil and gas law and development. He was recognized by the Colorado Bar Association with the status of Life Member in 2004.

William Buchtel Collister, legendary oil and gas attorney, died on Feb. 11. He was 89. He was born March 3, 1923, the son of Eva V. and Thomas C. Collister. He graduated first in his class from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Collister took special radar courses at Reed College and served as an electronics officer in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the School of Political and International Affairs at Princeton University in 1948, his law degree from the University of Denver College of Law in 1951.
Collister worked as an oil and gas attorney in Denver for more than 50 years and served as president of the Denver Petroleum Club. Read the full memoriam at
