William Levis, consumer counsel, Department of Regulatory Agencies, has been appointed the consumer advocate on the Federal State Joint Board on Universal Service by the Federal Communications Commission.

Hall & Evans LLC is pleased to announce that Benton J. Barton has been selected for membership in the American Arbitration Association’s National Panel of Construction Arbitrators.

Thomas E. Hames, senior trial counsel for Ray Lego and Associates, was elected chairman of the Board of Directors for the 10th Mountain Division Foundation, Inc.

Wheeler Trigg O’Donnell announced today that its partner, Lt. Col. Andrew Efaw, U.S. Army Reserve, was promoted to colonel at a ceremony in the law firm’s offices.

Efaw focuses his practice on defending complex commercial, product liability, and medical malpractice cases in federal and state courts.

John Zakhem, president of Zakhem Law, LLC, recently was appointed to the Board of Directors of Rush Soccer, the world’s largest nonprofit youth sports organization.

James J. Killean, a real estate and energy lawyer at Ireland Stapleton Pryor & Pascoe, PC has been selected to the board of directors for the Colorado Lawyers Committee.

Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP partner Kristin Lentz was honored this week with The M&A Advisors’ 2012 40 Under 40 Award for the Western Region.

Lentz is a partner in the firm’s corporate group and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. Her practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, private equity, bank financings, and public company offerings and securities compliance.

Sheila Slocum Hollis of Duane Morris LLP was honored as an Outstanding International Alumna by the University of Denver Sturm College of Law’s Denver Journal of International Law and Policy.

Prior to joining Kutak Rock, LaCouture was vice president and chief legal officer for Children’s Hospital Colorado. Langdon recently relocated to Denver and is a member of the firm’s employee benefits practice group, concentrating his practice in ERISA/employee benefits and executive compensation arrangements.

IN MEMORIAM

William McClearn

The Denver Bar Association was saddened by the news that former Denver Bar Association President William Cant McClearn died on May 8. He was 84. McClearn graduated from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1951. He was class president and a member of the Law Review. He joined Holland & Hart as a law clerk in 1950 and remained there his entire legal career, serving as head of the litigation department, chair of the Management Committee, and as firm chairman.

McClearn was president of the Denver Bar Association from 1977–78 and president of the Colorado Bar Association from 1980–81. He received the William Lee Knous Award, CU Law’s highest award, in 1990 and was awarded the CBA Award of Merit, the CBA’s highest award, in 2000. His other contributions to the legal community include serving as a member of the American Bar Association Board of Governors, 1984–87; member of the CBA Ethics and Grievance Committees; president of the American Bar Retirement Association; and member of the ABA Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility.

He was married to Evelyn for 59 years. McClearn was particularly fond of skiing, his many wonderful friends both within and outside the legal community, his extended family, and raspberries.

In addition to his wife, McClearn is survived by his children Bill Jr. (Vanessa), Barbara Baumann (Fred), and Maggie King (Andy) as well as six grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on May 14. Donations in McClearn’s honor may be made to the Colorado Bar Foundation (cobar.org) or the Evelyn and William McClearn Endowment at the History Colorado Center (historycoloradocenter.org).

Donald Hoagland

The Denver Bar Association was saddened by the news that Donald W. Hoagland passed away on May 5. He was 90. Hoagland moved to Denver in 1951 to join Davis, Graham & Stubbs, where he remained until his retirement in 1986. He was a champion of legal aid services as a responsibility of the profession. He was key to amending the DBA code of professionalism to include pro bono work as an aspect of it, and the Colorado Bar Association has an award that bears his name, the Donald W. Hoagland Award, which recognizes outstanding leadership in the development, support, and ongoing efforts in pro bono representation. DGS’s website noted, "Don’s legacy to the bar and to Colorado’s residents is evident from his public acclaim as the ‘father of pro bono legal services in Colorado’ as well as a man of ‘flexible foresight and intuition’ in the area of public health." He is survived by his wife Mary, their four children, and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service was held May 12 at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. Contributions in Hoagland’s honor may be sent to: Caring for Colorado Foundation at 1720 S.
