Monica Márquez Receives 2009 Davis Award

On Wednesday, Jan. 13, the 2009 Richard Marden Davis Award was presented to Monica M. Márquez of the Colorado Attorney General’s office at a dinner in her honor at The Brown Palace. The award is presented annually by Davis Graham & Stubbs, the Denver Bar Foundation and the Davis family to a young Denver lawyer under 40 who has combined excellence as a lawyer with civic, cultural, educational and charitable leadership in the tradition of Dick Davis early in his career.

During law school and the 12 years that Márquez has practiced law, she has distinguished herself. While earning her law degree at Yale Law School, she worked summers at the National Center for Youth Law (San Francisco); at Davis, Graham & Stubbs (Denver); at the U.S. Department of Justice (Washington, D.C.) and at the Equal Justice Initiative (Montgomery, Ala.), where she handled death penalty post-conviction defense work for Alabama death row inmates.

Márquez’s acceptance speech gave an inside look into her battles in the courtroom and in her personal life as an openly-gay female.

DBA President John Baker presents the 2009 Davis Award to Monica Márquez on Jan. 13 at the Brown Palace.

Baker and DBA Second Vice President Aaron Bradford catch up during the Davis Award cocktail hour. Márquez receives a much deserved congratulations from DBA Executive Director Chuck Turner.
