Picture This: DBA Happenings ![]() Monica Márquez Receives 2009 Davis AwardOn Wednesday, Jan. 13, the 2009 Richard Marden Davis Award was presented to Monica M. Márquez of the Colorado Attorney General’s office at a dinner in her honor at The Brown Palace. The award is presented annually by Davis Graham & Stubbs, the Denver Bar Foundation and the Davis family to a young Denver lawyer under 40 who has combined excellence as a lawyer with civic, cultural, educational and charitable leadership in the tradition of Dick Davis early in his career. During law school and the 12 years that Márquez has practiced law, she has distinguished herself. While earning her law degree at Yale Law School, she worked summers at the National Center for Youth Law (San Francisco); at Davis, Graham & Stubbs (Denver); at the U.S. Department of Justice (Washington, D.C.) and at the Equal Justice Initiative (Montgomery, Ala.), where she handled death penalty post-conviction defense work for Alabama death row inmates.
Former DBA President Wins Hispanic Bar award
Elsa Martinez-Tenreiro, DBA President 2007-2008, was chosen to receive the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association’s Annual Chris Miranda Outstanding Hispanic Lawyer Award. The award was presented at the CHBA’s banquet, Saturday, Jan. 30, at the Stonebrook Manor Event Center & Gardens in Thornton. The keynote speaker was Carlos Sandoval, director of "A Class Apart," a film that chronicles the story of Pedro Hernandez, whose murder conviction was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he received the right to a new trial by his peers. The other award recipients were: Michelle Martinez (Outstanding New Hispanic Lawyer); Arnold & Porter (Outstanding Corporate Commitment Award) and Legal Nights (Community Service Award).
Winter Festival gives hope and toys
On Jan. 23, more than 100 kids and their families enjoyed pizza, soda, cake, balloon artistry by Handy Andy and a magic show by Dennis Michael at the DBA YLD Winter Festival. Former Nuggets player Ervin Johnson also stopped by to see the kids. Each child received a large and small toy, a sporting good, book, stuffed animal and candy. Special thanks to the DBA YLD Winter Festival Co-Chairs, Gillian McKean Bidgood, Sarah Oviatt and Lucia Padilla for their tireless work on the project.
