Get Geared Up to Give: National Pro Bono Week in October
by Carolyn Gravit
Dear DBA members:
The annual National Pro bono Celebration is scheduled for Oct. 25–31. Sponsored by the ABA Standing Committee on Pro bono and Public Service, the celebration is a coordinated national effort to showcase the great difference that pro bono lawyers make to the nation, its system of justice, its communities and to the clients they serve.
The Denver Access to Justice Committee would like to acknowledge National Pro bono Week as a time to thank members of the Denver legal community who donate thousands of hours in free legal services, and those volunteers who take cases from Metro Volunteer Lawyers in Denver and Colorado Legal Services. The week is also dedicated to the quest for more pro bono volunteers to meet the ever-growing legal needs of this country’s most vulnerable citizens. If you would like to become involved with a legal clinic, a community event, or the Metro Volunteer Lawyers or Colorado Legal Services, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Thousands of Denver residents do not get critical legal assistance. They usually are forced to try to resolve complex legal problems on their own in areas including child custody, divorce, mortgage foreclosure, bankruptcy and domestic violence.
Lawyers have a special professional obligation to ensure that our justice system is accessible to everyone, and the need for attorney volunteers and pro bono service grows each day.
The Denver legal community has a long tradition of helping fill these gaps in our community. The DBA has helped to develop nine free legal clinics, including the successful Legal Night at Mi Casa, Legal Night at El Centro de San Juan and several pro bono clinics for Bankruptcy, Divorce, Small Claims and Collections. The DBA sponsors community events throughout the year, such as Lawline 9, a weekly call-in program at 9News; Homeless Veteran Stand-down; the Capitol Hill People’s Fair; and many others.
This year, as part of the week-long celebration, there will be two events the DBA is coordinating to celebrate National Pro bono Week:
First, there will be two special nights of Lawline 9 scheduled at Channel 9 for: Monday, Oct. 26, 5:30–7:30 a.m., and Saturday, Oct. 31, 7:30–9 a.m.
Second, Faegre & Benson is hosting a CLE for MVL volunteers to commemorate National Pro bono Week. MVL is the DBA’s pro bono program. Here is the information about this special CLE for working with pro bono clients:

We want to spotlight the legal work lawyers do in their communities to improve the lives of their friends and neighbors, and we invite you to be part of this rewarding effort.
Thank you for your participation!
