DBA–CLE November

Environmental Update & Hot Topics 2008 is Thursday, Nov. 13, 9 a.m.–4:40 p.m. With new developments and critical issues coming to the forefront in the Environmental Law arena this year, this program will update on everything new. All the bases are covered – air, water and land – and the presentations will cover the current issues facing each. There also will be critical information from the new Oil & Gas Conservation Commission and everything you need to know about handling self-audits. When Good Real Estate Loans Go Bad: Timely Tips and Strategies for Dealing with Workouts, Foreclosures, Receivers and Bankruptcy is Friday, Nov. 14, 8:30 a.m.–12:25 p.m. Today’s staggering real estate market and economy have created a large number of real estate loans that are either in default or in danger of going into default. When these loans affect your clients, you need to know the alternatives available to your client and how to steer them through the process of executing on a chosen alternative. In a convenient, half-day program, you will learn the key skills and knowledge needed to work your way through the problems associated with troubled real estate loans. Mental Health Law is Nov. 21, 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and is co-sponsored by the CBA Criminal Law Section. This program will focus on the ins and outs of representing clients in mental health actions, usually after they have been taken to a mental hospital and medicated against their will. Our experts will teach you the basics of how the law works in this discrete area of practice. You will learn about medical treatment hearings, including ECT, as well as sheriff’s transport issues, trial issues, how to maximize your chances of prevailing on appeal and much more. You also will discuss ethics including Rules 1.2 and 1.14, CBA Ethics Opinion 114, and applicable case law. CJI Award Dinner

The Colorado Judicial Institute’s Sixth Annual Judicial Excellence Dinner is Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the Denver Marriott City Center, 1701 California St. Cocktail reception is at 6 p.m.; dinner is at 7 p.m. Bert Brandenburg, Executive Director of the Justice at Stake Campaign in Washington, D.C. will be the keynote speaker. The award honorees will be the Hon. M. Jon Kolomitz, 16th Judicial District Court judge; Hon. Robert H. Russell II, 18th Judicial District Court Judge; Hon. Alfred C. YLD Winter Festival

The Winter Festival will be at the Denver Department of Human Services, 1200 Federal Blvd., on Jan. 24. This event collects gifts for Denver-area foster children, giving them an opportunity to celebrate the holiday. Interested in donating? Lawyers League Basketball

Lawyers League Basketball will kick off the 2008–2009 season in January, continuing through early March with the division championships. Team captains from last year should have received registration and sign-up information by the end of October. Games likely will be played at the University of Denver. The team entry fee is expected to be between $600 and $750, pending final facility and insurance costs.
