2007 DBA Award Winners

Award of Merit

The DBA Award of Merit will be given to John Baker. He is the current co-chair of the Metropolitan Conciliation Panel, current chair of the steering committee for the 40th Anniversary of Merit Selection of Judges in Colorado, past-chair of the Colorado Bar Association Attorney Admission and Law School Committee, member of the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado Conduct Rules Committee, member of the Judicial Advisory Council, and past-chair of the law school working group of the CBA Professional Reform Initiative Task force. Baker is a member of the CBA, DBA and Colorado Trial Lawyers Association. He is a fellow of the International Society of Barristers.

Judicial Excellence

Denver County Court Presiding Judge Andrew S. Armatas will be awarded the Judicial Excellence Award. He previously served as presiding judge from 1995 to 1997 and has been on the Bench of the Denver County Court since February 1990. Judge Armatas has worked with other agencies to establish a number of programs, including a juvenile offender work program, which permits work as an alternative to fines and costs; a juvenile curfew program; the Safe Nite Program; the Denver Domestic Violence Task Force; and the Denver Warm Welcome Child Care Center.

Judge Dana Wakefield will be awarded the Judicial Excellence Award. In 1980, Judge Wakefield was appointed to the Denver Juvenile Court. Judge Wakefield has been an adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law since 1982. He has served as president of the Juvenile Judges Council and was presiding judge of the Denver Juvenile Court from 1994 to 1998. He helped create the Juvenile Drug Court in 1999. He is part of the Children’s Justice Task Force and a member of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.

Volunteer Lawyer of the Year

Volunteer Lawyer of the Year Casie Collignon is the chair-elect of the DBA Young Lawyers Division and has served on the Executive Committee of the YLD for the past year and a half. Collignon sits on the DBA’s Budget Committee and will sit on the DBA’s Board of Trustees for 2007–2008. She served as a facilitator and presenter at the DBA’s Bench-Bar Retreat and has been on the executive committee for the Barrister’s Ball. Collignon has been active in the community where she volunteers for Metro Volunteer Lawyers, Law Explorers, Legal Night at Mi Casa, Attorney’s Night Out, Law Suit Days, Winter Festival and Law Week. She was heavily involved in starting an Urban Debate League in Denver.

Young Lawyer of the Year

Young Lawyer of the Year Matthew Crouch serves on the CBA/DBA Public Legal Education Committee, CBA/DBA Legal Fee Arbitration Committee and The Docket Committee. In addition to serving on numerous nonprofit projects, including with the DBA’s Community Action Network, Crouch is a member of the Greater Denver Tax Counsel Association, the Thompson Marsh American Inn of Court, and Street Legal Motorcycle Club. Along with his volunteer work, he encourages others in the legal community to get involved.
