Hanging Your Shingle

by Aaron M. Stephens

At first glance, opening your own law office may appear rather simple. You get some office space, a computer, a phone line and a client, and you’re in business, right? Wrong! There are a multitude of issues often overlooked in considering and attempting to open a law office. The issues may result in the demise of the law office and possibly the practitioner’s license. In order to avoid these results, the Colorado Bar Association CLE, in conjunction with the Lawyer’s Professional Liability Committee of the CBA, is sponsoring a two-and-a-half-day-intensive seminar entitled "Hanging Your Shingle" on Jan. 20-22. It will be held in the CLE Classroom at 1900 Grant Street, 3rd Floor, in Denver.

A faculty of seasoned practitioners will provide information and insight on every aspect of starting a new law firm. The information provided will be practical and immediately useful, including forms, sample documents, due diligence checklists, and phone numbers and locations for obtaining the services. The seminar will also provide information on how to succeed in your own firm; choosing an entity; preliminary business decisions; business planning; advice on computers, phones and copiers; obtaining the greatest library at the lowest cost; billing systems; practice maintenance including starting and reviewing files; common mistakes in court procedures; risk management; and business development and networking. The seminar will end with a panel of solo and small firm practitioners from varied backgrounds who will discuss the most common mistakes and pitfalls they have seen and experienced. They will also provide advice on how to avoid their errors.

In addition to invaluable advice, attendees will receive benefits from various local businesses, including discounts on malpractice insurance, discounted banking services, free software, and discounts on "hands on" technology training.

Additional information and seminar registration for "Hanging Your Shingle" may be obtained by calling CLE in Colorado at (303) 860-0608. (Confidentiality Guarantee: Participation in this seminar is confidential. By enrolling you agree to respect the privacy of other attendees. Colorado Bar Association CLE does not release registrant information.)
