Governance Column

JUST TAKE ONE
The Trustees Pro Bono Challenge

Metro Volunteer Lawyers Director Barb Chamberlain attended the DBA Board of Trustees meeting on Dec. 14 to distribute the first new pro bono case referrals to the DBA Board of Trustees. Many of the Trustees have offered to take cases in fields of law where they have not previously practiced, such as family law, bankruptcy and landlord/tenant. MVL promised to provide mentors and guidance to help these lawyers successfully handle their first cases in a new field.

The Trustees have "laid down the gauntlet" and issued their challenge to the CBA Board of Governors and to the bar association governing boards of the First Judicial District, Adams County, Arapahoe County and Douglas/Elbert counties (those being the other metro bar associations that support Metro Volunteer Lawyers.) We've challenged these boards to pledge that each lawyer member will take one new pro bono case, and that each judiciary or government-employed lawyer member, who cannot represent pro bono clients, will support the challenge and encourage or recruit lawyers to take pro bono cases.

The Board of Trustees also challenges every member of the Denver Bar Association to "Just Take One" case a year. Please call Metro Volunteer Lawyers at (303) 866-9378 today and tell them you want to TAKE THE TRUSTEES PRO BONO CHALLENGE! They have plenty of people who need your legal help.

DBA President
