President’s Corner: The Pro Bono Challenge

by Susan Smith Fisher

By Susan Smith Fisher
Denver Bar Association President

The DBA Board of Trustees Pro Bono Challenge is taking off. Your trustees are busy with their MVL clients, and Barb Chamberlain, executive director of Metro Volunteer Lawyers, reports they’re receiving new registrations from lawyers who are taking the challenge. If you haven’t yet done your part, please call Barb today at (303) 866-9378.

If every member of the Denver Bar Association accepts just one pro bono case each year, we can make huge strides toward providing access to justice for all of our citizens, and also help alleviate the problems of pro se litigants in our courts.

There are still plenty of people who need you, and you’ll be amazed at how rewarding pro bono service is. Next month, we'll tell you more about how the trustees are coming along with their cases.

CBA President Dale Harris made the annual presidential visit to the DBA Board of Trustees in January. He talked about the biggest challenges facing the legal profession today, including the declining relevance of lawyers in our society, the lack of diversity in our profession, and the influences of burgeoning technology. The CBA is engaging in a long-range planning process designed to help us actively address these issues.

You can get an edge on technology by attending the DBA Bench-Bar Retreat on March 3, 2001 (See page 6). Don’t miss this one! You’ll get useful information and cheap CLE credits while meeting and greeting lawyers and judges, with entertainment, breakfast and lunch included. What could be better than that?
