MVL Thanks Attorney Mentors and E-Z Filing!

by Craig Eley

This summer, 20 law students participated in Metro Volunteer Lawyers’ Evening Division Law Student Mentoring Program; 19 students were from the University of Denver and one was from the University of Colorado.

A reception for the students was held on May 28, at the Denver Bar Association offices. Justice Rebecca Love Kourlis addressed the group and praised their commitment to pro bono work.

On June 1, the students received an orientation taught by Wadine Gehrke, a clinical professor at the DU College of Law, and Margaret Walker, formerly a clinical faculty member and now with the Colorado Attorney General’s Office. Barb Chamberlain, recently retired director of Metro Volunteer Lawyers, provided logistical information and assigned cases.

The students are paired with a mentoring attorney to represent an indigent client in a civil case. The commitment is voluntary and carries no school credit. It is an opportunity for evening division students to have a practical experience and to provide legal services to eligible clients. Students meet practicing attorneys and learn practical lawyering skills under the guidance of their mentor. MVL provides many resources for the students and volunteer attorneys. Students can specify the type of case they want to work on and MVL tries very hard to find a case that matches the student’s interests.

The attorney mentors were: Cynthia Ciancio, Daniel Duggan, David Japha, W. Robert Montgomery, Jon Nicholls, Randall Arp, Fran Fontana, Andrew Goertzel, Guy Humphries, Richard Harris, Dennis Walker, Martin Bloom, A.M. Coren, Shari Baker, Mark Bove, Norman Campbell, Bruce Bernstein, Jane Ebisch, Thomas Faulkner, Rocco Dodson and DeeAnn Keller.

Participating students were: Lisa Alman, Erick Anderson, Damian Arguello, Karen Braem, Marie Bernal, Jennifer Dennis, Elizabeth Dequerse, Robert Edwards, Curtis Graves, Jill LaCount, Edward Levy, Suzanne Meintzer, Sarah Melius, Reed Morris, Pat Phatchamphone, Brian Schmidt, Brendan Shea, Heidi Snyder, Ruth Tucker, Amy Vandervort.

MVL also thanks Martin Mohr and Rick Pontalion of EZ-Filing, Inc. for their generous donation of the EZ-Filing bankruptcy forms software disc to MVL. This easy-to-use software is available in the MVL offices for use by volunteer attorneys representing MVL clients in Chapter 7 bankruptcy filings.
