Congratulations to the MVL Honorees

Each year, select attorneys are honored at the Denver Bar Foundation’s Barristers Benefit Ball for their extraordinary efforts and dedication to pro bono legal services.

Barbara Chamberlain, Stephen McKenna, Jennifer Holt and Tony Yuthas will be recognized for supporting free legal services to the poor through Metro Volunteer Lawyers (MVL). Holland & Hart LLP is the recipient of the "Law Firm of the Year" award, in recognition of its exemplary commitment to pro bono services.

The firm has been active in the MVL program since its inception. The firm has always had a proactive and well-organized pro bono program. Despite the fact that they are called upon to handle many pro bono issues by a spectrum of non-profit agencies, they have consistently contributed to MVL. In addition to handling many cases, the firm’s associates and partners have been active on both CBA and DBA legal services committees, providing many of the members who recruit and encourage pro bono work among all in the profession. These include Ken Hubbard, Betsy Phelan, Anne Castle, and the current chair, Steve Choquette, who has worked with the program since he was a student. The firm also donates space and other resources to the program for meetings, receptions, etc.

Barbara Chamberlain

Barbara Chamberlain is recognized for her dedication to the pro bono efforts of the DBA for many years. This includes giving up her private practice to direct MVL for five years, and taking pro bono referrals simultaneously. She perfected the Family Law Court Program, which has become a national model, allowing hundreds of clients access to attorneys and the courts who would otherwise have been pro se.

Stephen McKenna

An attorney at Gibson, Dunn, and Crutcher, Stephen McKenna volunteered for an extremely difficult case this year that took 450 hours to complete. His firm is a long-time supporter of pro bono services in Denver.

Jennifer Holt

Jennifer has handled 15 domestic cases as a sole practitioner since she joined the program in 1998. She has generously worked on the Family Law Court program when the staff needed her on an emergency basis.

Tony Yuthas

Tony Yuthas has participated in MVL for more than 15 years, having represented 36 clients in the last year alone. He has put in 619 hours on these cases. His expertise and dedication are a model for new attorneys everywhere.
