DU Law Stars Shine on Sept. 18: Katz, Munn, Truhlar x two, Wunnicke, receive honors.

The University of Denver College of Law has selected Donald Kortz, JD ’64; Doris Truhlar, JD ’80; Robert Truhlar, JD ’81; D. Rico Munn, JD ’96 and adjunct law Prof. Brooke Wunnicke as its 2003 DU Law Stars. DU Law Stars was created to honor distinguished alumni and faculty who have shown active involvement in the community, outstanding dedication to the legal profession and continued support of the College of Law.

Donald Kortz will be honored as this year’s Outstanding Alumnus, an award given for professional achievement and humanitarian service to the community. Kortz is a former president of the Real Estate Title Section of the Colorado Bar Association and founded the Colorado Chapter of the Real Estate Securities and Syndication Institute. Within the Denver community, he has served as president and chief executive officer of Rose Community Foundation and serves on the Board of Directors of The Children’s Hospital, National Jewish Medical and Research Center, Rose Medical Center, Judith Ann Griese Foundation and the Denver Zoo. He received the Mizel Museum of Judaica Community Cultural Enrichment award in 1999 and the Rose Medical Center Humanitarian of the Year award in 1990. Kortz is the current chairman of the board at Fuller and Company. He is the chair-elect of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce.

Doris and Robert Truhlar will make history as the first couple to be inducted into the Law Stars honoree family. Together they will receive the Alumni Professionalism Award, honoring exemplary ethical conduct and professionalism, dedication to pro bono work and community service. The two met and married while attending the College of Law. Today, they are partners in their firm, Truhlar and Truhlar, LLP, where Doris concentrates on family law and Robert on employment law. Doris is the Immediate Past-President of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association and the President of the Arapahoe County Bar Association. Robert is currently President of the Colorado Bar Association. During their professional careers, they have mentored DU law students as interns, clerks and DU graduates as associates.

Adjunct Law Prof. Brooke Wunnicke will receive the award for Outstanding Faculty for her work in advancing the relationship between the College of Law and the community, and her commitment to legal education. She taught at the law school from 1978-1997. Wunnicke is Of Counsel at Hall & Evans, LLC. A respected member of the Denver legal community, she is a dedicated teacher. In addition to practicing law, Wunnicke is a frequent lecturer on professional ethics and the co-author of well-known books on Letters of Credit and Legal Opinion practice. Brooke has received many awards and honors, as well as national recognition for her service to the legal profession.

D. Rico Munn will receive the Bruce B. Johnson Outstanding Young Alumnus Award. This honor is bestowed on a recent graduate of the College of Law (recipients must be 37 years of age or younger or at least three years out of law school) whose significant contributions to the community have earned him or her a reputation as an ethically upstanding lawyer. Munn practices commercial litigation at Baker & Hostetler LLP, and he has worked on the boards of numerous community and legal organizations including ACLU-Colorado, the Legal Aid Foundation, the Bighorn Center and the Colorado Bar Board of Governors. Munn was recently elected to serve on the State Board of Education. He is the first African-American to hold this prestigious seat.

All five honorees will be recognized at the DU Law Stars dinner Sept. 18, at the Marriott Hotel City Center. Proceeds support the Student Law Office and the Law Alumni Merit Scholarship Fund. CLE will be offered.
